Nigeria: Six
Sharia Judges Guilty of Corruption and Abuse of Power
The anti-corruption Commission of the State
of Zamfara (Nigeria), which began applying Islamic Sharia code since January
this year, has recommended the sacking of six judges of the Islamic court on
grounds of corruption and abuse of power, the commission's chair, Alhadji Aliyu
Sani Jangebe, said.
Panafrican News Agency (Dakar,
Senegal), May 9, 2001
The International Islamic
Information Agency (IINA) quoted an interview with Jangebe appearing in the
"New Nigeria" newspaper, saying the six magistrates were convicted on
charges of various dishonest dealings while performing their duties.
The magistrates were also
convicted for bad conduct, judicial error, violation of plaintiffs' rights and
illegal seizure of the properties of individuals.
However, Jangebe said some of the
accused magistrates have already refunded monies they extorted from people. But
he noted that the recommendation to dismiss them was in conformity with Sharia.
